21 September 2020
Rupert Bray officially assumed the role of Managing Director of Steamships Trading Company on Monday 21st September, 2020. He takes over from Michael Scantlebury in a planned succession move. Mr Bray has been with Steamships since August 2018, in the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, and has spent the last two years familiarizing himself with the various business activities of the conglomerate as the operational Head. Mr Scantlebury remains on the Board of Steamships and retains his substantive roles of Finance Director and Company Secretary. “This has been a well-planned transition”, commented Bray, “Mike has been invaluable to me in terms of helping me to understand the complexities of Steamships, and how to operate in the PNG business environment. I’m very grateful that he has agreed to stay on. His guidance and support will be invaluable as I complete this transition.” “I’m very honoured to become the 15th Managing Director of Steamships”, continues Bray. “It’s a company that has a remarkable history, and one that has grown with Papua New Guinea. We have great people and strong businesses, and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.” Before joining Steamships, Bray worked as the Marine Services Director of Swire Pacific Offshore, Swire Pacific’s offshore oil and gas division. He is a 25 year veteran of the Swire Group, Steamship’s largest shareholder, and has occupied various management roles within the group, including Chief Operating Office of UK based Swire Oilfield Services. In his earlier career he held numerous management roles for Cathay Pacific Airways in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and India.
