Prime Minister Marape Meets Steamships Executives, Welcomes New Managing Director

03 July 2024

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape had a productive meeting with top executives of one of Papua New Guinea's oldest trading companies, Steamships Trading Company, in Port Moresby this morning. The meeting took place over breakfast and included discussions with the outgoing Managing Director, Mr. Rupert Bray, and the newly appointed Managing Director, Mr. Chris Daniells.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Marape expressed his pleasure at hearing from Mr. Bray and Mr. Danielsl, both of whom voiced their confidence in the country's economy and the Marape-Rosso Government’s economic management. They highlighted the creation of a conducive environment that has helped restore investor confidence over the past five years, from May 2019 to May 2024.

Steamships Trading Company, which began operations in 1918, has been a significant player in Papua New Guinea’s growth and development. The company has expanded into various sectors, including property development, hotels, shipping, logistics, and more.
Mr. Bray and Mr. Daniells shared with Prime Minister Marape their ambitious plans to transform Port Moresby’s Central Business District (CBD). This includes redeveloping existing properties into modern hotel complexes and office buildings. Notably, they discussed the redevelopment of the Moresby Inn, situated opposite their iconic Grand Papua Hotel.

Additionally, Steamships Trading Company has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The company is partnering with PNG Power Ltd to promote and develop clean, green, and sustainable energy solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The Down Town Plaza has already seen a significant upgrade with the installation of solar panels on its rooftop, a step towards utilising renewable energy sources.

This initiative is part of Steamships' long-term commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Prime Minister Marape has been vocal in calling on industrialised and developed countries to take concrete actions to reduce carbon emissions and protect small island nations in the Pacific from the adverse effects of global warming.

On Tuesday 11th June, EastWest Transport (EastWest) proudly completed a successful partnership with the Rotary Club and Soroptimist International to donate 50 brand new student desk and chair sets to Baruni Primary School.

An official handover ceremony was held at the school where representatives from EastWest, alongside partners from the Rotary Club and Soroptimist International, presented the desks and chairs to the students and school’s Head Teacher, Ms. Irene Gaudi.

"On behalf of the entire Baruni Primary School community, I want to express our deepest gratitude to EastWest Transport, the Rotary Club, and Soroptimist International for this donation," said Ms. Gaudi. "Desks and chairs are often a significant expense for schools in Papua New Guinea, and this generous contribution will make a world of difference for our students."

The desks were made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Rotary Club and City Mission’s carpentry program in Port Moresby, who constructed the desks using locally sourced materials. EastWest played a vital role by assembling and delivering the sets to the school, ensuring they were ready for immediate use.

"EastWest Transport is committed to supporting the surrounding communities in which it operates," said Nicholas Bury, Commercial General Manager, Steamships Logistics.

"Baruni village is home to many of our valued employees, and we recognized a critical need to support the local school. This donation of desks and chairs will contribute to enhancing the learning experience for students and create a more comfortable and conducive learning environment, allowing students in Baruni to thrive and reach their full potential.”

EastWest Transport's collaboration with the Rotary Club and Soroptimist International demonstrates the company's commitment to investing in the local community. This donation of desks and chairs will have a lasting impact on the learning experience of countless students at Baruni Primary School.
