The Melo to be Redeveloped

28 April 2016

Coral Sea Hotels today announced the closure of the Melanesian Hotel & Apartments in preparation for the redevelopment of the site.

‘We have been studying the redevelopment of the Melo for some years, now it is finally a reality. The current hotel will be demolished to make way for a new 5-storey hotel, with increased and upgraded rooms and apartments, restaurants and bars, and conference facilities”, stated Glen Murphy, Coral Sea Hotels General Manager.

The Hotel will close on Friday 29 April, 2016. The redevelopment plan is aligned with Coral Sea Hotels’ commitment to continuously improving its properties across Papua New Guinea, to provide first class comfort and convenience to all its guests, whilst always creating memorable guest experiences through the superior customer service provided by its staff. The redevelopment project is expected to take three years to complete.

The Melanesian Hotel has enjoyed a long history as a Lae icon, at the heart of the community since it opened in 1965. Coral Sea Hotels thanks the Lae community and all its clients, guests and suppliers for the support provided.

“Coral Sea Hotels recognizes Lae as an important business hub within Papua New Guinea, and we look forward to expanding our presence in the city”, said Murphy. “We take this opportunity to thank our team at the Melo, they are valued members of the Coral Sea Hotels family and we are working to assist them secure new positions.”

Coral Sea Hotels also operates the Huon Gulf Hotel & Apartments in Lae, which will warmly welcome all Coral Sea Hotel guests during the period that the Melo is closed for redevelopment.

Brent St. Hill, Group Operations Manager (and previously Regional Manager in Lae), will be based at the Melanesian Hotel & Apartments to manage the closure process.
