Swire Launches two new Education Scholarships

Wednesday 8 November 2023, Port Moresby, NCD || John Swire & Sons (JS&S) Limited is delighted to announce the launch of two new scholarships for Papua New Guinean students: Swire University Scholarships and Taikoo College Scholarships.
The fully funded scholarships enable Papua New Guinean students to access financial support for vocational training and tertiary studies for the 2024 academic year.
The scholarships fall under the Swire Higher Education Scholarships Programme which is part of JS&S increased community engagement in PNG. These Swire Scholarships will complement the Steamships’ Community Grants Programme within the key pillar of Education which has a current focus on early childhood learning and primary school assistance.
JS&S PNG Limited is the major investor in Steamships Trading Company Limited (Steamships) and is the owner of Swire Shipping Limited which has extensive connections within PNG, linking global supply chains to local communities since 1941. Steamships will administer the scholarship programme on behalf of Swire.
Speaking about the importance of this programme, Managing Director of Steamships, Rupert Bray, said:
“This investment demonstrates Swire’s commitment to enabling young Papua New Guineans access to higher education through the provision of fully funded scholarships. As long-term investors in PNG, Swire recognises the need to invest in the communities in which it operates and always strives to be a force for good wherever it operates in the world. We recognise that many families in PNG face challenges paying tuition fees, preventing young people from pursuing higher education.”
“The scholarships enable people to access opportunities to enhance their knowledge, skills, and confidence, empowering them to fulfill their potential. The long-term impact of this programme will be to provide trained and skilled individuals who will help meet the pressing shortage of qualified graduates. It is anticipated that most or all of the graduating scholars will be offered employment within the Steamships Group or Swire Shipping PNG.”
The scholarships are now open for applications from eligible candidates, and these should be submitted by 29 December 2023.
