Steamships Hula Classic in it’s 4th Year

14 August 2023

On Saturday 12th August, the Hula Lighthouse Cricket Association and Steamships Swire Shipping Cricket Club (SSSCC) faced off against each other in the 4th Hula Cricket Classic.

The game was held at Raukele, Hula Village in Rigo District, Central Province. The friendly match began in 2019, and was spearheaded by Steamships Finance Director, Michael Scantlebury, who spent many weekends in Hula with the Kiteboarding club and hoped for more meaningful engagement with the wider community.

Spirits were high, with spectators from the Steamships’ group of companies travelling to Hula early Saturday morning to support their team. Hula won the coin toss and elected to bat first. The team had made their presence known with a home ground advantage, displaying world class batting, strategically placing their balls in the direction of the wind, finishing up the 20 overs with 204 for 6. It was Steamships turn to bat and defend their 2023 win. Unfortunately, the visitors fell short with 120 for 8. Congratulations to Hula Cricket Club who wowed the crowd with exceptional fielding, and 8 wickets.

“The matches have an impact on the local community by helping the younger generations to keep them away from unproductive social activities. The games serve as awareness for the younger generations to shift their focus to the matches,” said Hula Cricket Club Captain Kali Ila. The friendly games also build talent for local selection in the POM Cricket Association to make the National Cricket team.

SSSCC Captain, Rob Cranston when thanking the Hula village for a successful event further added that Hula has been a special location for staff to take time out, but also encourages our wider team to get involved in the community. Steamships was pleased to donate K4800 to the people of Hula, and cricket association in support of growing the sport within the village.

Hula village is well known for producing some of the country’s best cricketeers in the national cricket team – Barramundis and is the top performing team in the POM Cricket Club Association. Steamships thanked Hula and the 4 clans, church, and cricket association for their hospitality and ongoing friendship, presenting the group with K4800 worth of donations.
