Steamships donates K20,000 towards Red Shield Appeal Launch

Steamships commitment to Salvation Army continues today through donations and in kind services. Since 2012 Steamships have donated almost K1 million towards Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. The Red Shield Appeal is an annual event aimed at inviting corporate companies and individuals to donate to a worthy course.

Steamships assists Salvation Army in the Red Shield Appeal Launches annually, donates towards Red Shield Appeal and the Golf Day annually, and assists in paying for rentals for House of Hope. The Red Shield Appeal Launch kick started on Thursday 25th August at Grand Papua Hotel. More than 30 people representing their corporate companies and individuals including the media were invited. Steamships opened the Launch Appeal traditionally each year with a pledge.

This year Steamships pledged K20,000 and other corporate companies were invited to show their support as well. ANZ, BSP, Insurance Partners, SP Brewery, RH, Vanimo Jaya and individual sponsors pledged their support towards the course. Brian Bell also pledge support for prices for the Golf Day.


Steamships donates K100,000 to Susu Mamas PNG

Susu Mamas an NGO based in PNG, was formed 30 years ago to support and promote breast feeding for infants. The organization has grown now to provide a complete package of integrated health care for families in rural areas.

The partnership between Steamships and Susu Mamas commenced well before 2012 and continues today with the aim of delivering suitable health care services in rural areas in Papua New Guinea. Since its partnership Steamships has donated close to K500,000 in total to assist in promoting, providing and coordinating free primary health services within rural Papua New Guinea. A chq presentation of K100,000 was made on Tuesday 25th July at Steamships Office. Presenting the chq on behalf of Steamships was General Manager Corporate Affairs Mr David Toua.

Susu Mamas activities include assistance in rural areas;

  • Kagamuga Health Facility
  • Mt Hagen Health Facility
  • Level 2 Mobile rural outrage services WHP and Jiwaka Province
  • Eastern Highlands Province
  • Level 2 Mobile rural outreach services in EHP
  • Kapokamakiliki Community Health Post
  • Lae Health facility
  • Level 2 mobile rural outreach services Morobe province
  • Port Moresby Health facilities
  • Level 2 mobile settlement outreach services NCD
  • Level 2 mobile outreach service Central Province

Assistance in these areas include monthly health services, awareness on HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and immunization, breast feeding and infant growth monitoring.

In 2015,Susu Mamas PNG reported providing 105,748 occasions of service through all heath facilities, joint clinics and mobile outreach services across the provinces.

This represented a 32% increase in services over the previous 12 months. From August (1st-7th) Susu Mamas will be promoting World Breast feeding week. The promotion of breastfeeding and infant and young child nutrition is particularly important in reducing the rate of malnourished children in PNG.
